How To Fix Kitchen Sink DrainsIf you are having trouble with your kitchen sink drains in a mobile home, most of the time the problem will be that the pipes have become clogged with hair, gunk, grease and other matter. The first thing you should always do in such a case is purchase some lye in the form of 'Drano' or other equivalent product. Pour the lye into the drain and let it sit for as long as it says on the package. Lye can come in either a liquid form which you pour down the drain, or a powder which you have to mix up. Be very careful when dealing with lye products, because lye is a severely caustic alkaline which can cause burns which would be equivalent to a burn you might get from acid. Kitchen sink drains will back up, and the water will sometimes smell bad because of all the bacteria in the clog.
Because the clog will be mostly organic material, after some time it will open up and you'll be able to use a plumber's helper and water to force the clog to be free. However, what if the problem with your kitchen sink drains isn't related to a clog? What if the faucet is dripping from underneath your drain in a mobile home? Most of the time, pipes will not be made out of copper. Copper pipes are going the way of the horse, now-a-days. However, if it turns out that you do have copper pipes under there, you'll have to get a tube cutter. Use the tube cutter to cut out the section which is leaking. Go to a store such as Home Depot and buy the proper elbows and straight pieces. In order to braze the joint you'll need emery paper to completely clean the copper down to the metal, a brazing torch, plumber's solder, and plumber's flux. To solder a pipe, you first use the emery cloth to take all the oxidation off the copper. If you don't clean it well, the solder will not adhere. You then slip the elbows and straight connectors onto the pipe, daub flux all around the connection, then heat it up with your blow torch (propane). Once you think it's red-hot, apply the solder to the joint. Continue heating the connector and you'll see the solder suck into the connection all the way around the joint. When you take away the torch, it should be completely soldered. After you're done, test your kitchen sink drains to make sure that no water is now leaking by pouring water down the hole. If there are no drips, then you succeeded. If not, heat the joint again and apply more flux and solder until the job is successful. The torch will boil away any water that's inside the pipe, so there should be no worry. In this same manner, you could replace the fixtures, or even the whole sink if you desired to upgrade your hardware to something nicer like one from fisher manufacturing. You might consider a specialty sink such as a Kohler K-6546-3-96 Dickinson Apron Front / Specialty sink. If you have a problem with your kitchen sink drains, first check that you don't have a clog. If the problem is a leak, repair the copper pipes and if you want to replace your sink, consider Kohler. |
